Isle of Harris, No 1 IPA

No 1 is an English-style IPA from Island brewers Isle of Harris. It’s bitter and sweet, combining marmalade and dark caramel flavours.

It doesn’t get much more remote than this. The island of Harris and Lewis is more than 200 miles from Glasgow, a two and a half ferry ride from the mainland. When the weather turns bad, the island can be cut off for days.

Naturally, I had to visit and try some of the beer.

Isle of Harris brews traditional Scottish and English-style beers. This IPA is no exception: it’s a fairly traditional tasting IPA, though it does incorporate a startlingly untraditional number of hop varieties. There’s Brewer’s Gold and Cascade on the boil, then Citra and Columbus on the cool side.
